Shrimp Quotas: DFO's Same-ol-same-ol

It strikes me that the Co-op idea exercised by Fogo Island and the Labrador Shrimp Co is not a bad idea for community sustainability. Could be an answer to some of our community woes. But then I hear of things like the present DFO minister Gail Shea taking quotas from elsewhere and giving them to her own riding. A riding which has no shrimp processing ability or history... Sadly I guess this is a glimpse of the reality of the Newfoundland and Labrador ocean resources. Traded, stolen and picked clean.

  1. Thanks for sharing your opinion on this. I think we are way over due for a resolution on managing our own stocks and setting up ship along the shoreline communities to note that there are plenty of healthier ways to be garnering stocks from the sea rather than relying on DFO to claim expertise here. The missing aspect within DFO is that there is no cultural boundary within the scientific data to allow the real experts (fishers) to truly harness sustainable measures for our shrimp, cod, crab and the like. I think it's time to send a message to DFO that either their tactics for research integrate some cultural natural sustainability into scientific variables or else you leave it up to local offshore seafood investors to do it for them. The fact that over 17 different countries (NATO) have more jurisdiction over our stocks than we do is nothing more than a shrimp slap in the face, just like Gail Shea's. Get out your boats and fish DFO out of our offshore waters!
